Captain’s (B)log: Loot Crate Unboxing
So… I signed up for a subscription service known as Loot Crate. It sends geeky goodness to one’s doorstep on a monthly basis.
Each month has a theme. This month, my first ever Crate, has the theme VILLAINS. Exciting, right? Alright, diving in:
LGBTQ* Film History You Should Know
WINGS (1927, Academy Award Winning Film)
What is it about?
Two young men, one rich, one middle class, who are in love with the same woman become fighter pilots in World War I.
Why is it important?
This film is the oldest surviving footage of a same-sex onscreen kiss and often believed to be the FIRST same-sex kiss on film. WINGS is an important addition to film and queer history with its honest portrayal of the bond and interaction between two men as watched by an audience via celluloid prior to the “macho - men are men” attitude which would go on to flood mentality and film a decade later.
It’s time to try defying gravity-
-Like a shooting star, I can go the distance-
-Kiss me goodbye I’m defying gravity-
-I will search the world, I will face its harms-
-I’m Flying high, I’m defying gravity-
-I don’t care how far, I can go the distance-
-And you won’t bring me down! And you won’t bring me down-
-‘Til I find my hero’s welcome right where I-
-And you won’t bring me…
1 in every 3 women is tempted to approach a man with great hair.

Okay, so, I am not a fan of ads suddenly being mixed in my dash, but this one amuses me.
Every time I read it I think it says “with GREY hair” and I am tempted to reblog it and to complain that this man clearly does not have a lick of grey to him and is entirely unattractive.
And now I have done so.
Seriously, AXE, where’s our silver haired fox ad? (I kid, somewhat, but is there any reason not to? I mean, let’s not limit attractiveness to the young! So much potential. I mean, DOVE gets to do this for women, why not? I’m not even asking this as an matter of objectifying, but more in the “why are there not more older models for all things ‘this product will make you irresistible” shtick.)
Also, AXE. I don’t know if that even qualifies as “Great Hair”— are you sure you’ve got your finger on the pulse?
But mostly, I think, the issue here is a choice of layout and fonts. I mean, I routinely have to read it twice to see the actual words written. The word “great” is not actually divided, but it looks like it is going to be and that causes an autofill to kick in. Maybe that’s just something my brain does, maybe I just deliberately seek out MadLibs in every day life, but here we are.
It’s nearly 4 am. I should go back to sleep.
Captain’s (B)log: Mixed bag
So, I did not get the job I applied for.
But my current job and volunteer schedules have aligned seamlessly after months of being terrified things would never work out and I would have to drop SOMETHING.
I feel sick as heck today, but I also have the day off so I don’t have to work through the haze.
I am going to Boston for work tomorrow. I am not sure which bag that falls in, good or bad, at this time. We’ll see how it goes.
My first ever Loot Crate subscription box shipped out this afternoon so I have something to track obsessively- my favorite hobby.
I need to clean this house. Fingers crossed for a nice, cool weekend where I can clean upstairs without keeling over.
There is a squirrel who keeps persisting with our birdfeeder, as is the natural order of things, but to get to ours it must CLIMB OUR BACK DOOR. It never fails to sound like the Hulk smashing through my kitchen wall. It both amuses and terrifies me.
My phone has so many pictures of this squirrel. So many.
Anyways, that’s what my life is right now.
Last night my little sister (5th grade) was making an e-mail account
She saw gender and went to click female when she noticed the “other” choice
She looked at me confused and I started to explain that some people don’t think they fit in with strictly male or female
"Oh! You mean like transgender and stuff like that. I was freaked out for a second- I thought they meant robots."
Yet another example the kids are more open-minded than adults
Everyone: Lwaxana, no.
Lwaxana Troi: LWAXANA, YES!
Me: Explain First Strike again?
Col: Okay, you know in anime when there's a fight scene and two characters run at each other with their swords like this (-makes x motion with arms-) at the same time and then they lop each others' heads off?
Me: ...what kind of anime are you WATCHING?
